Many couples come to couple’s or marriage therapy because they have experienced some kind of concern that they are having a difficult time navigating together. The majority of the time couples feel they are not communicating in an effective manner. Other areas of concern often include: trust, control, abandonment, finances, infidelity, addiction, intimacy challenges, and life transitions.

In couple’s therapy, partner’s can work on effective communication styles, attachment styles, love languages, rebuilding trust, and reconnecting as partners. They get to know one another all over again and often in a new way!

Our B Balanced approach to couples therapy depends on what the couple needs and what their goals are for their partnership. Our Licensed Therapists utilize a variety of techniques such as Gottman Method interventions, Bowen Therapy and Emotionally Focused Couple’s Therapy. Every couple is unique and works through situations differently. We strive to meet couples where they are and help them navigate to where they want to go. Our therapists use interventions such as: genograms, timelines, love languages and becoming emotionally aware.

Families often seek out therapy due to an event or situation that has disrupted the family system and resulted in negative effects. In family therapy, each individual plays an important role in the therapeutic process. Some concerns that are often mentioned include: life transitions, boundaries, conflict, communication, family roles and relationships within the family. Family therapy can be extremely beneficial in securing healthy relationships and a cohesive safe environment that facilities positive communication. Additional benefits of family therapy include: restructuring the family system, learning how to communicate effectively, how to navigate some of life’s trickiest transitions and what role each member of the family plays within the system.

When it comes to family therapy, our B Balanced approach utilizes a Structural Family Therapy model. Frequently, restructuring the way the family system is functioning can help everyone gain a new perspective. Structural Family Therapy consists of components surrounding: hierarchy, roles, rules, subsystems, goals, boundaries and collective needs. Sometimes, families just need to see their system through a different lens and stop the patterns that are leading to conflict and miscommunication. Structural Family Therapy can absolutely support families affected by trauma, divorce, separation, remarriage, blended families, intergenerational families systems, single parent families, and significant life changes.

What is Art Therapy?

The American Art Therapy Association (AATA) describes art therapy as: An integrative mental health and human services profession that enriches the lives of individuals, families, and communities through active art-making, creative process, and applied psychological theory…

Benefits of Art Therapy…

Some research studies have shown that by making art for 45 minutes you can lower the stress hormone cortisol in your body (Kaimal et al., 2016), and that connections in different parts of the brain can be improved that help people become more resilient to stress, and improve the immune system (Bowler et al., 2014). Due to more and more research being conducted on the benefits of art, the World Health Organization is starting to recognize that art can be highly therapeutic, and a form of medicine as of Nov 11th, 2019 (Fancourt et al., 2019).

When would I need a Custody Evaluation?
When going through a separation or divorce, parents decide voluntarily they want a child custody evaluation to help determine the best interests of the child regarding the custody schedule, but for many involved in a high conflict divorce, a custody evaluation has been court ordered. Licensed Mental Health Professionals, who in addition to their clinical expertise in mental health are also knowledgeable in the areas of child development, family relationships and custody, can be extremely helpful to parents in deciding what might be the best parenting agreement for their child/children and family unit.

Who does Custody Evaluations at B Balanced?
Brittany Todd, our Founder and CEO and also Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, Interventionist, and Parent Instructor, is additionally credentialed through the National Board of Forensic Evaluators, as a Certified Forensic Mental Health Evaluator and a Certified Child Custody Evaluator. Brittany has had over 10 years of experience working with individuals and families in the legal system, supporting them in navigating the determination of best interests for their children and family entities.

What is the Custody Evaluation process?
A Custody Evaluation includes a diagnostic interview with both parents and children (usually done individually), a parenting interview with both parents together, individual psychological testing of the parents and children, parent-child interaction observations, and collateral contact interviews and records review and digest. The evaluator assesses the mental health and wellness functioning of all family members, and the parenting skills of both parents. The evaluator considers the child’s psychosocial needs, which are related to developmental age and the unique personality and temperament of the child. They evaluate each parent’s strengths in clinical interviews and meetings that apply to the child/ children’s needs and unique needs of the family as a whole. The evaluator takes into close consideration how well the social environments of each parent (school, neighborhood, social supports, community, etc.) meet the current needs of the child/children. Lastly the evaluator factors in empirical data of psychosocial needs and on different custody and visitation arrangements at varying ages. After complaining and analyzing all of this information, the evaluator generates an opinion as to what the best custody and visitation arrangement possibilities are at this time. The evaluator provides a written report with a great deal of information and analysis presented, however they do not make the final custody decision. Their expert opinion is a primary factor in the final parenting agreement, any family therapeutic services, and/or all court and legal custody proceedings. If the parents can not come to an agreement, the judge will consider and utilize the CCCE’s expert opinion to determine the decision.

To schedule a consultation and/or retain Brittany Todd for an Evaluation please contact 336-607-5822, hello@bbalancedcounseling.com, or email Brittany directly at Brittany@BBalancedcouseling.com.

A Mitigation Specialist plays a crucial role on a legal defense team, in particular during capital cases. Throughout the legal proceedings of a case, the Mitigation Specialist provides defense attorneys with professional analysis related to the case to support a fair trial and sentence. They collect information that directly impacts the case and pertains to the client, they help identify mitigating key evidence, and determine the necessary experts to testify regarding mitigating circumstances presented in the case.

We remember most how something or someone made us feel. Our body and mind respond to stimuli in a way that can elicit a ripple effect on our day and those we interact with throughout the day. Our environment has a strong link to our mental and emotional state. Our surroundings stimulate all of our senses simultaneously, and can quickly evoke a positive or negative emotional response in people. What we surround ourselves with and how we function in the spaces we frequent has a direct impact on how we feel.

Research has supported the importance of creative, mindful, and authentic expressive design of the spaces we spend intentional time in. By using psychology and emotional identification to design creative spaces, our comfort, satisfaction, peace, and inspiration can flourish and grow. Simply small changes to colors, room layout, textures, fabrics, and meaningful art pieces can easily improve a person’s mood and evoke positive feelings and behaviors. Color, lighting, placement of furnishings, artwork and objects and how they authentically speak to you affects how we feel in a space. In fact, multiple studies have illustrated through the research of neuroscience, that viewing art that is meaningful to us can even evoke the same emotions as falling in love.

Brittany Todd, Founder | CEO | LCMHC of B Balanced, has a creative eye and passion for the design of authentic, beautiful, and intentional spaces. When working with clients on the planning and design of their spaces, Brittany dives into their passions and unique traits, discovering creative and affordable ways to incorporate these elements into their environment.
